Youth and Family Counsellor: Cedar Hill

We pride ourselves in making a positive difference in the lives of children and youth. We are currently seeking a capable and committed Youth and Family Counsellor to work at Cedar Hill Middle School.  This position features meaningful work in an integral role within the school community.  Rewards include spring and winter break as paid holidays while also including July and August off (unpaid):  

Youth and Family Counsellor


The role of the Youth and Family Counsellor is to provide identification and intervention in the
areas of counselling, skill development, advocacy, and support services to vulnerable children/youth
and their families. Children/youth who are vulnerable are those who are experiencing familial,
emotional, behavioural, and/or cultural issues which significantly limit their capacity to function
effectively within their family, school, and/or community.

Goals of the Youth and Family Counselling Service

The Youth and Family Counsellor aims to have students:
a) Remain enrolled and connected with an educational program;
b) Maintain, repair and encourage healthy attachments to family and other significant adults;
c) Develop healthy social relationships and positive self worth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will demonstrate competency in the following areas:
a) Individual, group, and family counselling;
b) Crisis management intervention;
c) Conflict resolution and mediation skills;
d) Liaison and advocacy skills;
e) Outreach with youth & families;
f) Knowledge & ability to connect with community resources;
g) Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team of school administration, counsellor, teachers and other school


The successful applicant:
a) Will possess a degree in Child and Youth Care or Social Work (or equivalent), with related experience working with
vulnerable youth and their families.
b) Will have the means and ability to do outreach to students and families
c) Will have a clear Criminal Record and Abuse registry check.
d) Be expected to join the South Vancouver Island School Based Youth & Family Counsellors Association.

Employment Terms:

2018-19 School Year Contract: September 8, 2020 - June 25th, 2021*
Salary range $27.50-$30.50 per hour. Eligible for extended benefits after 3 months of employment. 

Paid holiday time during winter and spring breaks (close to 4 weeks) plus summers off (unpaid).
